The PDP UK & Northern Ireland Chapter is committed to deepening the relationship between the Party's structures in Nigeria and Nigerians in the diaspora — a priority made all the more urgent by the stage of preparation now under way for the General Elections. A more structured, strategic and sustained approach to diaspora engagement will measurably strengthen the Party's reach, communication, mobilisation and stakeholder relationships across the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.
Nigerians abroad represent a substantial reservoir of professional expertise, resources, networks, goodwill and international influence. Their engagement should therefore extend well beyond periodic political activity, and be developed into a coordinated and sustainable framework that serves both the Party's electoral objectives and Nigeria's broader national development agenda.
We are at a critical junction in our nation's journey. Our voices, our skills, our remittances and our advocacy matter. We must register, organise, communicate, and vote. The future of Nigeria demands nothing less.

Our focus is on identifying and unlocking opportunities for diaspora investment and development partnership, with particular attention to the Federal Capital Territory: investment promotion, professional networks, skills transfer, business linkages and practical initiatives capable of connecting Nigerians abroad with opportunities in Abuja and across Nigeria.

Our origins
The formation of the Peoples' Democratic Party
Born from a courageous stand against military rule and a national demand for democratic renewal.
Amid Nigeria's military dictatorship under General Abacha, a group of elder statesmen became concerned about attempts to extend military rule. In 1997, seven key figures — including Mallam Adamu Ciroma and Abubakar Rimi — met in Kaduna to form a new political platform aimed at restoring democracy. This effort evolved into the G-18, and later the G-34, a group that openly opposed Abacha's transition plans.
Led by Dr. Alex Ekwueme, the G-34 became a symbol of national democratic aspiration. When Abacha died on 8 June 1998 and General Abdulsalami Abubakar took over, he initiated a transition to democracy, dissolving state-created parties and encouraging genuine ones.
On 19 August 1998, the G-34 and over 30 political associations united to form the Peoples Democratic Party. The PDP was officially launched on 31 August 1998, with Dr. Ekwueme as Chairman of the Steering Committee and Professor Jerry Gana as Secretary.

To be registered, parties had to meet INEC criteria including national spread and local government election performance — initially 10% of votes in 24 states, later reduced to 5%. The PDP emerged as a major political force, capturing the desire of Nigerians for competent, inclusive and democratic leadership.
